Netiquette is about respect in the technological realm.
You have to remember that it isn't just a screen, but also a real human being involved. Per Virginia Shea, "Netiquette has ten rules remember the human, adhere to the same standard of online behavior as you follow in real life, know where you are in cyber space, respect others time and bandwith, make yourself look good online, share expert knowledge, keep flame wars under control, respect people's privacy, don't abuse your power, and be forgiving." Out of all of these rules the most important one to me is to remember the human! A lot of the issues could be prevented or resolved if the golden rule is remembered and we do unto others as we would like them to do unto us. Cyberbullying is an epidemic that relates to poor netiquette. It is easy to do due to the technological advances such as smartphones being right in your hand. "Cyberbullying can be text, apps, social media, email, forums, gaming, etc. It includes sending, posting, or sharing any negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone else. It can include personal or private information and some cyberbullying is a crime." Cyberbullying is unique in that, "it can be persistent, permanent, and hard to notice." The more digital platforms a child uses, the more opportunities for potential cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is a form of bullying and needs to be acted on as such. One thing parents can do is to communicate openly and often and a good source is the knowbullying app created for parents and teachers. In conclusion, cyberbullying is a real issue and people needing to learn that netiquette is an issue as well. If one has proper netiquette then they are less likely to have cyberbullying issues.
